Top Albums of 2008: 20-11

While I’ve placed 31 albums in my favorite albums of 2008 list, I am only posting the top 20 on the front page. Visit my lists section to see the entire 2008 Top Albums list.

Come back tomorrow for the full list.

13 Year-Old Meets ‘The Walrus’

The Beatles no doubt had one of the largest impacts on music this world will ever know. This video is an interview with John Lennon by a 13 year-old in 1969. Here it is reproduced with amazing illustrations:

I Met The Walrus
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview. This was in the midst of Lennon’s “bed-in” phase, during which John and Yoko were staying in hotel beds in an effort to promote peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries traditional pen sketches by James Braithwaite with digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.

New Music

Another quick post with some music that I’ve been enjoying. Keep an eye out for a few of these on my top of 2008 list, hopefully soon to come.

Benoît Pioulard - Ragged Tint from Temper

The Walkmen - Donde Esta La Playa from You & Me

Wilderness - Strand the Test of Time from (K)now (W)here

Vinyl Pot o’ Gold

To record collectors, rummage sales are our holy grail. Sure stores that sell vinyl are great, but stumbling upon records in someone’s front yard generally yield a much better return on investment. Thankfully, I’ve convinced many of my co-workers and friends here to call me immediately if they find records at yard sales. On Saturday, I got one of those calls. Dana and I were just about to head out of the house anyway, so we rushed to the location of said yard sale.

What a find! Here’s what I picked up:

All that for $17!

Music Video

Here’s a really interesting approach to creating a music video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I want more, more, mmmooorrre…

Sigur Ros at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sigur Ros recently played a magnificent concert at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Current.tv is kind enough to have the entire performance on their site. You can view the performance below.

Recently Enjoyed Music

I just realized that it’s been over a month since I’ve done one of these posts, so I wanted to get another post of music samples up.

The first is from one of my long-time favorite bands, Death Cab for Cutie. Their new album, Narrow Stairs was recently released, and I think it’s a worthy successor to their previous efforts. I am pretty sure that this record will be on my year’s best-of list. Here’s a sample from their recent single, “Cath.”

Death Cab for Cutie - “Cath” from Narrow Stairs

The second track is from a new discovery in the alt-country world. Fleet Foxes hail from Seattle and have garnered a nice following since their debut LP was released this year. The harmonizations on their vocals are gorgeous. I am positive this record will be in my top 10.

Fleet Foxes - “White Winter Hymnal” from Fleet Foxes

Last, but not least is a sample from the Soundtrack for the film, Once. The film is a modern musical in which the songs were all written by the two starring actors, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. The duo have been touring as The Swell Season, and unfortunately, I missed them when they were in my neighborhood.

Sigur Rós Webcast

National Geographic will be live webcasting the Náttúra concert in Iceland, at which Sigur Rós and Bjork are playing. You can view the webcast at the Nat Geo Music website at 7pm GMT, Saturday, June 28.

As a reminder, Sigur Rós’ new album, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, is available in stores now, and it’s beautiful.

A Building As An Instrument

David Byrne is one of my favorite musicians. He was the lead singer of the Talking Heads until their breakup in 1991. The Talking Heads pushed the boundaries of music by combining vastly disparate genres.

In his post-Talking Heads life, Byrne has continued to push music and art. He has converted old buildings into instruments before, and has recently done this again in New York. Below is a video on the project.

I’m very excited to receive this record in physical format. Although, I wish they were releasing a vinyl on the first street date too. Oh well…
