Northwood, ND was hit by an F4 tornado yesterday, August 27. The Fargo Forum reports that the tornado was eight-tenths of a mile wide and almost five miles long!
Some incredible photos have been posted here and here.
Best of luck to the citizens of Northwood on rebuilding their lives.
One of my favorite things about Dreamweaver is the the Extension Manager. I frequently use List-O-Rama! and have built galleries using Project Seven’s Image Gallery Magic.
Today, I stumbled across a new Dreamweaver Extension that looks incredibly useful: Eric Myer’s CSS Layout Generator from WebAssist, via Zeldman dot com.
This is an extension I probably wouldn’t use much, because I so rarely design a site from scratch anymore, but it is great to see Eric Myer building tools to make standards-compliant layouts easier for the non-CSS Jedi, like myself.
Dana and I had a nice trip to Atlantic City and Barneget this week, even though the weather didn’t cooperate (as you can tell from this photo). It rained from Monday through Thursday afternoon, when we left Barneget. We spent a day in Barneget visiting her cousins, but unfortunately her aunt, Judy, was not home, as she was on a mission trip to Romania for the week. While in Barneget, we went to the Barneget Lighthouse and strolled around the pier/beach for a bit.
Even though we were on vacation, it certainly appears the rest of the world wasn’t. We caught some Sportscenter highlights (lowlights?) of the Orioles v. Texas Rangers game, in which the Orioles were beat 30 to 3, a feat not witnessed since 1897!
I returned to the webternet with some disappointing news from one of my favorite venues, the 9:30 Club: a much-anticipated stop by Texas favorite, Spoon has been moved to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, so that Spoon can co-headline for The Shins. Unfortunately for me, I have absolutely zero interest in seeing The Shins. I’ve seen several videos of their live performances and they always appear to be quite dull.
As you can tell from the photos in our vacation gallery, the weather was chilly as well. I got used to wearing my jacket all week, but of course, today Washington has a heat advisory and it feels like 105 outside. Welcome home!
Macapper has a very useful tutorial on how to make a custom trigger in Quicksilver to look up words in the Dictionary.

Friday morning I came down with a really nasty bug, most likely from the nachos I had at the Hawk ‘n’ Dove here in DC. I was convinced by a good friend that it was a beter idea to go to the pub than to the gym…turns out that was a bad idea. I’m feeling mostly better now, but I’m still a bit uneasy.
Dana and I have the week off, and were planning on going camping in the Allegheny Mountains in New York. After finding out how much rain Hurricane Dean is bringing to the East Coast, we had to change our plans and have now decided to go to Atlantic City for a few days. We are then going to head over to Dana’s relatives’ home in Barnegat, NJ.
Our friend Lindsay was in DC this weekend, and I have a few photos over at our photo gallery. We went to the amazing Brickskeller on Saturday night for a few refreshing brews. You have to check out their Beer list. There are roughly 1,000 beers on their list, although not all of them are available at all times.
My favorite IM client, Adium has released version 1.1. The list of changes is over at Adium’s trac, but includes fixes for file transfer, tabbed chats including the Summer of Code changes. The change that I’m enjoying the most is iChat-style changes to status in the buddy list.
I first saw this on the New York Times’ website this morning, but here’s the Washington Post story as well.
Karl Rove, the architect of President Bush’s two national campaigns and his most prominent adviser through 6-1/2 tumultuous years in the White House, will resign at month’s end and leave politics, a White House spokeswoman said this morning.
While I suspect that he will continue to work with President Bush and Republicans in some capacity, I think this is good news for Democrats.
I just found out about this new service XRAY and am in love. Combining XRAY, with Firebug, and YSlow gives web developers a tremendous advantage. Unfortunately, Firebug and YSlow both require Firefox, which can sometimes be pretty buggy. Nonetheless, I highly recommend anyone looking into web development to take a peak at this extensions and learning more about your web pages.
Also, if you haven’t looked into Greasemonkey, I highly recommend it - it’s another invaluable Firefox tool, especially when it’s combined with things like Better gMail or Better Google Calendar.
Thursday night (8/9/07), I went to the DC United v. LA Galaxy match at RFK Stadium. Of course, this match brought a tremendous amount of press with it, because Beckham hadn’t yet played in the US for an MLS game. This match sold out several weeks ago, and thanks to my friend, Steve, I had tickets. Given the amount of hype surrounding the match, I’ve been asked several times about how I feel about Beckham.
I played soccer several years ago, but had fallen out of touch with the game for several years. I’ve recently become much more interested in it and have had several conversations about what Beckham means for the game. So, here’s my public statement on what David Beckham means for MLS.
It’s great that someone is bringing attention, media, and money to MLS. American soccer is by no means as exciting to watch as the FA Premier League or some of the other World Cup leagues, but it’s a great sport and the athletes deserve a lot more attention and notoriety.
With that said, I definitely think that Beckham’s skill does not equal his talent. We had/have players like Freddie Adu and Landon Donovan, but it’s rare that games draw 46,686 fans like last night’s game, which is unfortunate. Adu is arguably a much better player than Beckham, and Donovan is definitely no slouch either (and plays for the Galaxy).
I also fear that the MLS will pursue talent like Beckham at the expense of the league due to the outrageous sums that they are willing to pay popular players. It seems every sport has far too much money thrown around at hyped players, but it would be nice to see some of them keep a little sanity.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Beckham’s membership in the MLS changes American’s viewpoints of such a great game. I’ll never hold out belief that more people will play soccer than baseball (like American Sports Data currently estimates is true for skateboarding v. baseball), but it would be great to have more people attend games and be into the sport.
