Geekout!

Microsoft today announced their release of Remote Desktop for Mac v2. I use RDC to connect to my office computers all the time, and have been awaiting these improvements for a long, long time. Thanks guys!

You can get RDC v2 at Mactopia downloads.

A Quiet Week

Things have been pretty quiet around here lately. I caught a hellaciious cold last Sunday (the 22nd) and it knocked me out for a couple days. I’m mostly well, but Dana’s coming down with something now, unfortunately. In the meantime, here’s what has been keeping us busy:

  • Pownce is a new communication service that’s been lighting up the blog-o-sphere. I was fortunate enough to come across a invite and it’s a pretty cool service. I’ve been treating it as a mini-blog for links and such, but the file-sharing amongst friends is the central component that makes this service a standout from other communication services.
  • I was just fortunate enough to receive an invite for Grand Central, a unique new service that links all of your phone numbers to one number. This is clearly a pivotal service for folks with an on-the-go lifestyle. While we may not always be movers-and-shakers, it will be interesting to try the new service.
  • My current battle of the wills, is resisting the incredible deals over at Deal’s Outlet store. Currently, there are 17 22-inch monitors for oly $269! I’ve been spending a lot more time on my computer at home, and this is just what I’ve needed.
  • We recently purchased a VinoTemp wine refrigerator. It’s been a great home for our 2003 C.G. di’ Arie Zinfandels, 1997 La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino, 2000 Allegrini Amarone, 2000 Fianesco, and so on…
  • We’ve been looking at the Virginia Wine Festival. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make it.

Top 10 Mario Games

Great little piece about the Top 10 Mario Games. I agree pretty wholly on this list. Super Mario 3 was amazing.

More Music Samples

Here are a few more samples of music that I’ve been enjoying lately.

Andrew Bird - Simple X from Armchair Apocrypha (2007)

Andrew Bird is a talented singing-songwriting whistler from Chicago. On 2007’s Armchair Apocrypha, he finally collaborated fully with Minneapolis electronic artist Dosh and they produced this magnificent tack, which was originally written by Dosh for his own record.

The Hold Steady - Stuck Between Stations from Boys & Girls in America (2006)

The Hold Steady are a group of guys mostly from Minneapolis that now live in Brooklyn. Thankfully, for those of us whom love Minneapolis, they still sing about the area with references to the Mississippi River, Washington Avenue, the 494, Lyndale Avenue…well, you get the picture. A self-admitted bar band, their witty lyrics and obnoxiously energetic live shows have cemented them as one of my favorite bands.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think of them.

New Photo Gallery Theme

Head over to my concert photos to see a new theme the kind folks over at Gallery have been kind enough to include in their newer versions of the application.

I plan to redo the background, but the theme behavior is pretty cool.

Supporting the (US) Troops

An Australian private security operator was left for dead by American forces after he was seriously wounded during an ambush in southern Iraq.

The US refused to provide a helicopter to evacuate the wounded man after being told he was Australian, News Limited reports.

While I guess that a “private security officer” is not technically a soldier, this news surely does not improve the portrayal of American troops at home or abroad.

The Simpsons Version of Me

Keeping the theme of my previous post, this is what a computer thinks I would look like if I were a Simpson’s character:
Simpsons avatar

Compare that with my Mii - from the Nintendo Wii:
Mii
My friends think both are pretty accurate portrayals of me, although I think the Simpson’s version could use a little more of a smirk.

One More Point for Technology

The BBC has an interesting piece about a computer that can now win or at least draw any game of checkers (referred to as draughts in the article).

This computer has been playing checkers by itself for years and has literally played out every move, so it knows the best possible move in every situation.

You may say “big deal,” but this is a pretty enormous step for artificial intelligence. Chess is the next big step, but according to this article it has a billion billion billion billion billion possible positions. Our current computer processing power, for all of its glory, would take eons to solve the problem

The saying “Getting there is half the fun” became obsolete with the advent of commercial airlines.

Some Music Samples

It’s been awhile since I’ve sampled for my few listeners out there in blogging world, the music that I’ve been enjoying lately. This is my attempt to make up for lost time.

Battles - Race:In from Mirrored (2007)

This track is what would probably referred to as math rock. I highly recommend listening to the entire clip to get the best feel for the song.

The National - Secret Meeting from Alligator (2005)

The National could be described as a more mainstream-sounding indie rock band. Enjoy!

Ryan Adams - Goodnight Rose (2007)

Ryan Adams is a songwriter with some very country roots. He’s one of the most prolific songwriters I listen to.

These three samples represent a pretty good cross-section of the styles of music I enjoy…although it would take a lot longer to make a true representation. I hope you enjoy what I’ve been able to prepare.
