A quick easy recipe

So last night, I tired an interesting recipe for steak:

Take a 12″ skillet, and brown steak in it. Remove the steak from the pan, then dump into the skillet about 1.5 cups of water and 1 cup of salsa and bring it to a boil. Place some noodles and the steak back in the pan, and cook until the noodles are soft. It’s pretty tasty! And pairing it with a grenache is perfect!

C.G. Di’Arie

C.G. Di’Arie is a relatively young Shenendoah Valley vineyard based in the Sierra Foothills of California. Chaim and Elisheva produce some absolutely astounding wines. If you have a chance to drink the 2003 Syrah, I suggest that you purchase it and drink it immediately, for you will be tasting one of the best wines of the year (in the $30 price range), in my opinion.

There is a great history on their website, and if you have an interest in wine, it’s really worth reading. Their description of the terrior of the region is really interesting. I hope that I’ll get to visit them soon!

Got a fever?

Well, if you do, the only prescription is More Cowbell! My friend Kyle has asked myself and my great friend Travis to write for his blog over at http://www.morecowbell.net. My first post will be a review of a concert I’ll be attending tomorrow with my lovely wife Dana. I’ll also be posting here, so no worries, you won’t be left out!

Some new cat photos

I’ve uploaded some more cat photos to our photo gallery. Here are some samples, but be sure to check out the new photos of both Stewart and Wallace.

New Section!

Victory is finally mine! I have finally accomplished adding some functionality to the application that I use for this blog: enabling sub pages. Some of you may ask, “Now what is the nerd talking about?”

First things first: I an application called WordPress to write this blog. You may ask why I need an application, instead of just writing web pages? Well, believe it or not, it’s easier. Editing HTML is time-consuming. Not to mention the incredible features that come with WordPress. It’s a free application (as in $0 and the code is available and 100% editable).

So, what’s this great new section? Well, it’s not much now, but it will be useful as years go by. I give you “The Music “Archive” Lists Galore! I’m going to keep my past years’ Top Albums lists as well as the list of concerts I’ve attended. Check it out and enjoy!

The nerd in me is forcing me to say this too: To enable this functionality, I added the following code to the page.php file in my theme (Blue Horizon):
< ?php if(wp_list_pages("child_of=".$post->ID.”&echo=0″)) { ?>

    < ?php wp_list_pages("title_li=&child_of=".$post->ID.”&sort_column=menu_order
    &show_date=modified&date_format=$date_format”);?>

< ?php } ?>

Politico-Techno-idiocy

There’s been quite a bit of press lately over the Minnesota Senate race. Now, I’ve tried to stay away from posting about campaigns this cycle, but this BS by Republicans should not be allowed to slide, especially by technologists.

Apparently, a “liberal” blogger found an ad on an unsecured website (hosted by Mark Kennedy’s media people). So this blogger sent the ad to Amy Klobuchar’s communications director. Well, that was probably not a wholly intelligent move, but then again, it probably wasn’t the worst move either. So, Klobuchar fires her CD, and GOP blogger’s and pundits go apeshit saying that a Klobuchar operative hacked Kennedy’s website to find secret information.

Note to Mr. Kennedy’s campaign: “hacking” does not involve getting information from a public URI! I just used Google to find out what Kennedy’s home page looked like on 9/16/06. Oh my God! I’ve hacked his website! I’m going to be on the front page of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune tomorrow for hacking his site again. God, I only wish. You see, I simply looked at the cached version of Kennedy’s site. When Google combs the web for information, it stores in its servers, the version of the page it saw when crawling the web. This is called the “cached version.” It’s simply another way to get information off the web, and probably one that Kennedy’s campaign wouldn’t like to see.

MN GOP chairman, Ron Carey says this about the event:

This is an extraordinarily sad day for all Minnesotans who value fair play in public life.

Wrong, Mr. Carey…it’s an extraordinarily sad day for all Minnesotans who understand anything about the webternet, because we realized that campaigns will still take any stupid opportunity to try and garner bad press against the opposing side. (I take that back, it’s not “an extraordinarily sad day,” because we know this all ready)

Some great quotes

So I get this email every week from a guy who compiled a book of the best liberal quotes…sometimes they’re great, sometimes, they’re lame. This week’s was particularly enjoyable, and I wanted to share these selections:

What do you mean, you “Don’t believe in homosexuality”? It’s not
like the Easter Bunny, your belief isn’t necessary.
– Lea DeLaria

There is a lot of talk now about metal detectors and gun control.
Both are good things. But they are no more a solution than forks and
spoons are a solution to world hunger.
– Anna Quindlen, regarding school violence

Wiiiiii

Nintendo is expected to announced today (NY Times) that their new gaming console, the Wii (pronoucned “we”), will be released November 19, with approximately 25 games available at launch date and the system will include a game!

YES! That’s just two days after my birthday, so it looks like I won’t be working the 20th and 21st…

The Problem With Bananas

Is that they squish in your bag. I squished my banana yesterday, and it kind of bummed me out, because I was looking forward to eating a non-squished banana.

MIA

Yes, I have been missing in action…it’s been a whirl-wind past few weeks. I’ve been insanely busy at work, not that my busy-ness there keeps me from posting, but it keeps me from wanting to spend time on the computer at home, which I shouldn’t be doing now. But Dana is talking to her parents, so I figured I could listen to some tunes and write a bit.

Last Friday Dana and I went to a party, and then to a concert, and then I went and played cards with some friends. All this after leaving work at 7:30 pm. I got a new Apple Mac Pro at work, so I’ve been enjoying that. It’s very, very fast, and it’s really helping me there. I’ve gotten very used to Mac OSX over the years (pretty much all of brandonhirsch.com has been created on a Mac Powerbook G4, which is still limping along). So, having a Mac at work, has helped me a lot. I find the operating system to be much more intuitive than Windows, and also more powerful. As I’ve mentioned before somewhere on here, Apple OSX is based on Unix, which allows the administrator of a computer a lot more control of his/her machine.

At any rate, enjoy the previous few posts, and be sure to check out the Wallace video.
