Amigos

The moment at which you realize how special people are is pretty amazing. We all have it, but it’s an incredible moment when you realize that one person (or maybe several persons) are there to not only help you with anything, but are touching your lives and shaping your growth as a person.

There’s been many people in the past in my life whom I still think about frequently, and I haven’t talked to for years. But they were there at a moment when I needed some direction and these incredible people touched my life, and because of that I’ve never forgotten them, and won’t (at least I don’t think).

I’ve realized that there is another person (in addition to my beautiful wife) now. Good friends are pretty incredible. Sharing laughs with them is different than with anyone else. Sharing your heart with them feels different than with anyone else.

It’s a neat time to realize that you’ve found an amazing friend, and one whose friendship was probably taken for granted in the past. Be that as it may, “it makes much more sense to live in the present tense,” and take that friendship and grow with it.

This post is more for myself and you than everyone else who reads this, but I thought this was important enough to put here.

Thanks brah.

hearts…

I see a beach
… the waves pounding against the shore.
A beautiful girl,
her heart beating against her breast.
I see a tall, handsome man. Now I see it!
Now I see it!
I can hear the roar of the Ocean.
And finally I can hear the
Music of love.
I CAN HEAR THE HEART BEATING AS ONE.

Some New Shows added to the calendar

Some New Music

I recently discovered the band Midlake. As my friend Kyle said, “Fleetwood Mac is the new Joy Division.” What he’s referring to is that many new and up-and-coming bands were drawing heavy influences (i.e. imitating) Joy Division a few years ago, and now bands, like Midlake, are drawing heavy influences from Fleetwood Mac.

Check out Midlake’s MySpace and listen to some tunes. I am particularly fond of “Roscoe.”

“Roscoe” by Midlake from The Trials of Van Occupanther:

Stonecutters made them from stones
Chosen specially for you and I
Who will live inside
The mountaineers gathered tender
Piled high
In which to take along.
Driving many miles, knowing they’d get here.

When they got here, all exhausted
On the roof leaks they got started
And now when the rain comes
We can be thankful

Ooh aah ooh
When the mountaineers
Saw that everything fit, they were
Glad and so they took off

Thought we were devoid
A change or two
Around this place
When they get back they’re all mixed up with no one to stay with

The village used to be all one really needs
That’s filled with hundreds and hundreds of
Chemicals that mostly surround you
You wish to flee but it’s not like you
So listen to me, listen to me

Oh, oh, oh and when the morning comes,
We will step outside
We will not find another man inside
We like the newness, the newness of all
That has grown in our garden soaking for so long

Whenever I was a child I wondered what if my name had changed into something more productive like Roscoe
Been born in 1891
Waiting with my Aunt Rosaline

Thought we were devoid
A change or two
Around this place
When they get back they’re all mixed up with no one to stay with

1891
They looked around the forest
They made their house from cedars
They made their house from stones

Oh, they’re a little like you, and
They’re a little like me
When they’re falling me

Thought we were devoid
A change or two
Around this place
(This place)
(This place)

When they get back they’re all mixed up with no one to stay with
(When they get back they’re all mixed up with no one to stay with)

Life During Wartime

I think anyone who reads this probably has a good feeling about my feelings towards the war on ‘terrrr” (i.e. terror). If not, you can reference the cynicism in Mr. Mark Twain’s The War Prayer. Particulary the piece:

Lord our God,
help us to tear their soldiers
to bloody shreds with our shells;
help us to cover their smiling fields
with the pale forms of their patriotic dead…

But the real purpose of this post is another “Song of the (insert arbitrary time-frame here).” I (thanks to my good-friend Travis) have fallen in love with the Talking Heads. The Heads first record ‘77, released in 1977 showed the Heads’ potential. They had a large impact on music during their career. This song, “Life During Wartime,” was from their (in my opinion) incredible record Fear of Music. Ironically titled, Fear of Music opened with the afro-beat “I Zimbra,” and proved to be a stark departure from their previous efforts. At any rate, “Life During Wartime” (released in 1979) portrays lead singer’s David Byrne’s feelings about going into a Presidency lead by Ronald Reagan amidst the cold war (better and more thorough review of the song at AllMusic.com.

“Life During Wartime” by the Talking Heads from Fear of Music:

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons,
packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway,
a place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance,
I’m getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstore, lived in the ghetto,
I’ve lived all over this town

This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco,
this ain’t no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey,
I ain’t got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver,
hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas,
you don’t even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading,
everything’s ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime,
I might not ever get home

This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco,
this ain’t no fooling around
This ain’t no mudd club, or C. B. G. B.,
I ain’t got time for that now
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peant butter,
to last a couple of days
But I ain’t got no speakers, ain’t got no
headphones, ain’t got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can’t write a letter, can’t send a postcard,
I can’t write nothing at all
This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco,
this ain’t no fooling around
I’d like to kiss you, I’d love you hold you
I ain’t got no time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock,
we blended with the crowd
We got computer, we’re tapping pohne lines,
I know that ain’t allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives,
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now,
I don’t know what I look like!
You make me shiver, I feel so tender,
we make a pretty good team
Don’t get exhausted, I’ll do some driving,
you ought to get some sleep
Get you instructions, follow directions,
then you should change your address
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day,
whatever you think is best
Burned all my notebooks, what good are
notebooks? They won’t help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace,
the burning keeps me alive
Try to stay healthy, physical fitness,
don’t want to catch no disease
Try to be careful, don’t take no chances,
you better watch what you say

Sonic Youth @ 9:30 Club

Last night, I went to Sonic Youth at Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club. It was a great show. I’ll post the setlist when I can find it!

NPR has the concert available for download.

Present Tense

This is one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs, and I was fortunate enough to hear it played when Dana and I saw them recently, here in Washington.

I try to live my life in a way that I don’t regret things I’ve done in the past, which is what Ed talks about on this song. Clearly, in this song something pretty bad as been done, but I think it speaks to other instances in our lives as well. This is not to say one shouldn’t learn from past mistakes, but regretting them will get you know where. Or, as Ed says, “You can spend your time redigesting past regrets - makes much more sense to live in the present tense.” Well said Ed.

“Present Tense” by Pearl Jam originally appeared on No Code:

do you see the way that tree bends?
does it inspire?
leaning out to catch the sun’s rays
a lesson to be applied
are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?
you can spend your time alone, redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you’re the only one who can’t forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense
have you ideas on how this life ends?
checked your hands and studied the lines
have you the belief that the road ahead ascends off into the light?
seems that needlessly it’s getting harder
to find an approach and a way to live
are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
you can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets, oh
or you can come to terms and realize
you’re the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh
makes much more sense to live in the present tense

I-94 via GPS

In case any of you were ever wondering…this is what the interstate in North Dakota looks like on GPS:

Interstate 94 via GPS

But here’s what the interstate looks like from my seat (bugs and all):
Interstate 94 via car window

And here’s what the interstate looks like from the side of the road:

ND Highway from the side window of a car

It’s been a fun week in North Dakota, but I am looking forward to going home. After living away from ND for about three years, and from the midwest for over two, it has become much more pleasurable to return. I enjoy the wide-open spaces a lot. It’s a nice change from our “yard,” which is about 6 square feet of grass that doesn’t grow!
