Amusing Joke…

So, I went to the gas station today and asked for $5 worth of gas. The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

Song of the week #8

Greetings friends, it’s that time again (all ready!). I picked this song, “A Shot in the Arm,” because it has two of my favorite lines of song lyrics:

“The ashtray says you were up all night.”
and
“We fell in love, in the key of C. We walked along, down by the sea.”

They’re not incredible insightul or anything, I just think they’re cool lyrics, and I hope you do too!

“A Shot in the Arm,” by Wilco, from Summerteeth

The ashtray says
You were up all night
When you went to bed
With your darkest mind

Your pillow wept
You covered your eyes
And you finally slept
While the sun caught fire

You’ve changed

We fell in love
In the key of C
We walked along
Down by the sea

You followed me down
The neck to D
We fell again
Into the sea

You’ve changed
Oh, you’ve changed

Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm
Maybe all I need is a shot in the arm

Something in my veins, bloodier than blood
Something in my veins, bloodier than blood
Something in my veins, bloodier than blood
Something in my veins, bloodier than blood

The ashtray says
You were up all night
When you went to bed
With your darkest mind

You’ve changed
Oh, you’ve changed

What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore
What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore
What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore
What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore
What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore

Song of the Week #7

This is a pretty amusing song by the groovy band The Magnetic Fields, called “Washington, DC.” It’s off their magnum opus, “69 Love Songs,” which is a three-disc set, where each disc has 23 songs, all about love. Enjoy!

Washington, D.C. by The Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs:

W a-s-h i-n-g t-o-n, baby, D.C.!
W a-s-h i-n-g t-o-n, baby, D.C.!
Washington, D.C.
It’s paradise to me
It’s not because it is the grand old seat
Of precious freedom and democracy
No, no, no
It’s not the greenery turning gold in fall
The scenery circling the Mall
It’s just that’s where my baby lives
That’s all.
Washington D.C.!
It’s the greatest place to be
It’s not the cherries everywhere in bloom
It’s not the way they put folks on the moon
No, no, no
It’s not the spectacles and pagaentry
The thousand things you’ve got to see
It’s just that’s where my baby waits for me
W a-s-h i-n-g t-o-n, baby D.C.!
W a-s-h i-n-g t-o-n, baby D.C.!
Washington, D.C.!
It fits me to a T
It’s not the people doing something real
It’s not the way the springtime makes you feel
No, no, no
It ain’t no famous name on a golden plaque
That keeps me that makes me ride that railroad track
It’s my baby’s kiss that keeps me coming back
It’s my baby’s kiss that keeps me coming back

Ted Leo/Pharmacists Concert Review

Last night, March 24, Dana and I went to the Black Cat to see one of my favorite bands, Ted Leo/Pharmacists. It was my 7th time seeing TL/Rx last night, and I was not disappointed. I encourage everyone to go to the TL/Rx homepage and click on “Audio” in the upper-left. Download a couple tracks, and don’t worry he put them there, so it’s legal.

The opening bands, Les Aus, and The Duke Spirit, were actually pretty enjoyable I thought. Les Aus was intersting…I would compare them to Fugazi, but more stripped-down (there’s only two of them), and a little more abstract (more noise-jams). Oh, and Spanish. The Duke Spirit were just a solid British post-punk band. Good rhythms, nice melodies, and they rawked.

TL/Rx rawked the house, as always. Ted lived in DC for quite awhile, as I understand it, and so DC holds a special place in his heart. Unfortunately, it does not hold a special place in his larynx. He lost his voice completely about a week ago, so he probably should not have been singing at all. But he did well. I missed some of his trademark, “Oh, we oh oh oh oh oh’s,” but I wont’ complain (much more).

TL/Rx started their set with the old classic “Dial Up,” a solid beginning for sure. He then played a new song, which I’m not sure of the title. It was pretty decent. He then followed up with a couple of Shake the Sheets. After playing for about an hour, and ending with Biomusicology, he came back for a two-song encore. All-in-all, I can’t say there was any one moment to highlight, but it was a great show. Exactly what I expect from TL/Rx.

Setlist:

  1. Dial Up
  2. New Song
  3. Little Dawn
  4. Me and Mia
  5. Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?
  6. The High Party
  7. Heart Problems
  8. Hearts of Oak
  9. New Song #2
  10. The One Who Got Us Out
  11. Counting Down the Hours
  12. Under the Hedge
  13. Shake the Sheets
  14. Biomusicology
  15. Encore

  16. Timorous Me
  17. Walking To Do

matt pond PA Concert Review

I can’t help but watch a band like matt pond PA, and think that it must be pretty wild to play a full-house at the 9:30 Club.  Their stripped-down stage presence is testament to the fact that they are not yet “big-time” indie stars, but their sound is testament that they are on their way.

matt pond PA has an extremely minimalistic stage set up.  Matt has about 5 guitars, and the rest of the band seems to just play with what they have.  There aren’t a lot of amps for everyone to trip over…which wouldn’t be a problem anyway, because no one in the band really rocks out.

It’s clear however, with matt pond constantly saying, “Wow, this is so cool.”  That they really don’t understand how big they are.  They are only going up, but I think that before they do, they need to learn how to be a bit more energenitc at their shows.

Setlist: still to come

Untitled #2

As some of you know, my grandfather passed away on February 22nd. This is without a doubt the absolutely hardest thing I have ever been through. I’m sure any of you have lost a parent understand. Also, as most of you know, my grandparents raised me for almost my entire life, so losing him was just like losing a dad.

His passing was completely unexpected, and so it hit both myself and my grams really hard. I don’t know how to describe it, except that his passing has changed me. I’m not sure how, but I definitely feel differently.

Recently, Gramps and Gram came to visit Dana and I in DC. We had a great time and Dana cooked a wonderful Thanksgiving meal for us all. We have some pictures in our photogallery. We are very thankful that they were able to visit us. Gramps was in a lot of pain, because his hip was wearing out, but we all had a good time, and he drove around the little electric carts they have in stores for folks who have trouble walking.

It’s taken me a long time to write about this, because I knew it would be rough. Each day is getting a little better, and I’m sure the wounds will heal with time. Although, like any wound, there will be a great deal of scar tissue that will never heal.

I miss you gramps.

This one’s for you Gramps:

If Tomorrow Starts Without Me

If tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes All filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me, as much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too.
But if tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand
That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand.

He said my place was ready, In heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind All those I dearly love.
But when I walked through Heaven’s gates, I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne.
He said, “This is eternity, And all I’ve promised you.
Today your life on earth is past, But here life starts anew.”

I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last,
And since each day’s the same way There’s no longing for the past.
So if tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart.
For every time you think of me, I’m right here, in your heart.
